Program Note

Inspired by an imaginative scarecrow decorating contest held every Halloween in Benicia CA, these five pieces (perfectly suited for a Halloween-themed recital!) depict a varied selection of straw-stuffed personalities:

1. Scarecrow sets up the spooky fun with sneaky pizz. and wailing melodic lines.
2. Ghost-crow haunts us with eerie harmonic glissandi, wide menacing vibratos, and a distorted nursery-rhyme tune.
3. Skeleton-crow dances on awkward, bony, knocking knees.
4. Windy leaf-crow depicts dry leaves blowing mysteriously as the cello sings an autumn song. The effect of descending thirds mimic a turkey's gobble.
5. Zigeuner-crow is a shameless parody of Sarasate's brilliant Zigeunerweisen for virtuoso violin and should be played with the appropriate tongue-in-cheek bravado.
